Local Matters: Poverty, education and place.
At the University of Manchester, we have developed a new research approach to understanding and responding to poverty in schools. This approach moves beyond the simplistic and centralised one-size-fits-all interventions currently dominating the sector. Local Matters is about recognising that poverty is different in different places; Southampton is not the same as Bradford, so requires localised knowledge and localised answers. Essentially, we support school staff to become place-based social justice researchers. In this podcast Dr Carl Emery explains what Local Matters is, how it understands poverty differently and how, through using research, schools have developed localised, and collaborative responses. Local Matters is a participatory research and teaching programme that works alongside educators to investigate and explore what we know about poverty (locally and nationally), train participants in social research methods, explore the local poverty context and then apply this knowledge and research skills, through action research, to make changes to school practice and policy. Essentially, we train school staff and the school community to be locally embedded social justice researchers.
